Privacy policy
Last updated: 24 September 2026
This policy explains what information Parenting Apart collects, why we process it and the choices you have. Parenting Apart is the service operated by a company registered in England and Wales (company number 16998528), with its registered office at 124-128 City Road, London, EC1V 2NX. You can contact us at support@parentingapart.app.
The short version
Parenting Apart is a shared space for parents and carers who coordinate care across two homes. The information you enter is used to run that shared space with your co parent or carer. We do not sell personal data. Weekly reflections stay private to you unless you choose to share a summary. You control many settings in the app, and you can close your account at any time.
What we collect
We collect information in the following ways:
- Account details: your name, email address, and a phone number if you choose to provide one. Passwords are stored in hashed form and never in plain text. You can also sign in with Apple or Google.
- Co parent details: the name and contact details of the other parent or carer, either entered by you or provided by them when they join your family workspace.
- Children's details: names, dates of birth, notes and profile information that you add for planning care.
- Content you create: messages (including the original and edited versions when you use message reframing), expenses and receipts, calendar events, swap requests, handoff checklists, decisions, shared documents and weekly reflections.
- Communication information: delivery and read status for messages, notification preferences, and the dates and times of activity.
- Technical information: session records including IP address and basic device information for security, push notification tokens, and optional usage analytics.
- Subscriptions: payment processing is handled by Apple App Store or Google Play. We do not collect or store payment card numbers.
How we use your information
- To set up and run your account and your family workspace.
- To share the workspace with your co parent or carer, which is the purpose of the service.
- To deliver messages, reminders and notifications, including by SMS or email using the contact details you provide.
- To provide features that analyse or help you write messages, such as reframing, tone labels and suggested replies.
- To let you share selected data with a therapist, mediator or solicitor when you choose.
- To keep the service secure, prevent misuse and resolve issues.
- To understand and improve the product using aggregated or anonymised information.
- To meet legal and regulatory obligations.
Legal bases for processing
We process information to perform the agreement we have with you, where you have given consent, to pursue our legitimate interests in operating a secure and effective service, and to comply with the law. For example, message delivery is part of the service you asked for, analytics sharing is based on your consent, and security logs support our legitimate interest in protecting the service.
Who we share information with
- Your co parent or carer: schedules, expenses, messages and other workspace content form the shared family record and are visible to the other adult in the relationship.
- Professionals you choose: you decide which data categories to share with a therapist, mediator or solicitor, and you can stop sharing at any time.
- Service providers that help us operate: cloud hosting, SMS and email delivery, file storage, push notifications, optional analytics and AI providers that power message and insight features. They are contracted to process data only for us.
- Authorities and courts: only when required by law, regulation or a valid legal request.
We do not sell personal data and we do not use family data to target advertising at you. Our full provider list is available on request.
Mobile phone numbers and text messaging consent are never shared with third parties or affiliates for their marketing or promotional purposes. We share a phone number with our SMS delivery provider only to deliver the messages you or your co parent send through Parenting Apart.
AI assisted features
Some features use AI providers to process the content you give them. This includes analysing or rewriting a draft or sent message, labelling tone, generating suggested replies, and producing session prep summaries for professionals. Only the content you provide for that feature is sent to the provider, and it is not used to build profiles about you.
International transfers
Some of our service providers are based outside the UK and European Economic Area. Where this happens, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses to protect your information.
Retention
We keep your information while your account is active and for as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy. Raw analytics events are retained for up to 24 months and then deleted. When you close your account, your access ends and we remove the personal data linked to it. Shared family records such as messages, schedules and expenses are retained because they also belong to your co parent and form part of the shared family record. Where a third party holds related data, we ask them to erase it as part of closing the account.
Security
We protect information with measures including encryption in transit, hashed passwords, restricted access and monitoring of the service. No system can be completely secure, and we cannot guarantee that unauthorised access will never occur. If a data breach affects your information, we will notify the relevant regulator and you as required by law.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to access, correct and erase your personal information, to restrict or object to processing, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. Many controls are available in the app, including notification settings, analytics sharing, professional shares and data exports. You can close your account from within the app, which ends your access.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@parentingapart.app. We will respond within one month. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk.
Children's data
Parenting Apart is designed for adult parents and carers. Details about children are entered by their own parents or carers as part of planning care. We do not intentionally collect information directly from children.
This website
The Parenting Apart website does not use advertising cookies or third party tracking. The mobile app also does not use advertising identifiers to target ads at you.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The current version is always available on this page, with an updated date. If we make a significant change, we will tell you before it takes effect, for example by email or within the app.
